How Do I Download a File in Netscape?
This is a good question and the steps below will help you to understand how to download files from the web onto your computer and find and run them. These directions are only slightly different if you are using Internet Explorer.

Sample File Download

Step #1. The first thing that will happen when you want to download a file in Netscape is a new window will open up asking you where to save the file.  Click on the 'Sample File Download' above to see the new window.
Step #2. After clicking on the link a new window will pop up called 'Unknown File Type', You will have four choices on this window (More Info, Pick App, Save File, Cancel). Select the 'Save File' button.
Step #3. This will cause a new window to open called ' Save As...', this is asking you to specify the location on your computer where you would like to have the file saved. At the top is a box called 'Save in:' and next to that the name of a directory.  So, that things are easier to find from now on let's make a directory that all your downloads can go in.
Step #4. Click on the folder with the up arrow on it until you arrive back at your C: drive. When you are at your C: drive, right click in the pane below the drive directory.   This will open a little menu, select New then Folder.  Name this new folder 'Download' and after it is created doubleclick on the folder to go into it. Click the Save button, and your file will start downloading.

Hint: If you download a file and can't seem to find where you placed it, you will need to know the name of the file.  If you are unsure of the name of the file, on the page where you downloaded the file from move your mouse over the link that allows for the file to be downloaded.  On the bottom of Netscape you will see the path and the name of the file.  (Example:  On the link above called Sample File Download, on the bottom of netscape you will see: http://www.pchelponline.com/resources/download.zip) The download.zip is the name of the file you are going to download.

Hint: If this is still confusing then let us recommend you get WinZip, the newer versions of this software integrate into your browser so that right after a download is completed WinZip pops open and allows you to view the contents of the file immediately.
