Definition: FTP stands for "File Transfer Protocal", this basically is a way for you to get a file on a remote machine to your computer. To accomplish this feat you will need some kind of program that allows you to log into another system and get the file. For example in Netscape you can download files to your computer, this is done by means of FTP. But, Netscape isn't always the best choice for browsing and downloading files to your computer. That is where a dedicated FTP program comes in their main function is downloading files and they do it very well.
