Definition:
Gopher is a subject-based menu-driven guide to finding and retrieving directories of
information on the Internet. It is a tool for finding a resource if you know what you
want, but not where to find it. Gopher systems are menu-based, and provide a
user-friendly front end to the Information retrieval and the searches. Gopher
organizes all the information it finds from the many databases, online library catalogs,
bulletin board systems and other resources available on the net into subject, geographic
location, or type of service. When you run a Gopher Query a lot of things occur that are
not apparent to you, like transferring files, changing directories, telneting, and
querying servers all over the world. Gopher finds whatever information you want, no
matter where it is.
